XBox 360 – How To Configure A Static IP On A Xbox 360 Located On Your Local Network (LAN)

There are many reasons that you may want to set a static IP on your Xbox 360 but the biggest reason would probably be the fact that you are having trouble playing online multiplayer games. I will be writing another article soon about how to resolve the issue of NAT showing as Moderate on your Xbox 360.

This article is specifically related to assigning a static IP on your home network to your Xbox 360. Once you complete the below steps you will always know the address of your Xbox 360 on your local network which will make things such as port forwarding easier in the future. Follow the steps below to assign a static IP address to your Xbox 360.

[tab:Step 1]

Configure A Static IP Address On A Xbox 360

  1. Locate An Available IP Address: First locate the IP address of your local computer so you know what addresses are used on your local network. To do this open a Command Prompt window and type “ipconfig” as shown in the below image.

This will spit out a bunch of information about each network adapter on your computer. In the example the computer is connected via the Wireless Network Adapter so write down the IPv4 address under that adapter. After you do that the next goal will be to verify an IP address on the network that is not already being used.
Typically your network will be 192.168.1.X or 192.168.0.X where X is the last octet and can be anything from 2 to 254. If you are using a Linksys router or something similar usually any address under 100 will work as long as it is not being used so think of the address you want to use and attempt to ping it from the same Command Prompt window.
Below is an example of testing to see if 192.168.1.22 is being used.

As long as each request times out as displayed in the example image above you can use that address for your Xbox 360.

Power On Xbox 360: Now power on the Xbox 360 and navigate to the My Xbox main menu as displayed in the below example image.

[tab:Step 3]

Navigate To System Settings: Now from the My Xbox main menu scroll to the right until you get to the My Xbox System Settings as displayed in the below image.

[tab:Step 4]

Open Xbox 360 System Settings: Click on the System Settings window to launch the System Settings main configuration window as displayed in the below image.
From the System Settings main configuration window you can access Console Settings, Family Settings, Memory, Network Settings, Computers, Xbox Live Vision, and the Initial Setup.

[tab:Step 5]

Launch Xbox 360 Network Settings: Scroll down the System Settings until you reach Network Settings which you should click on to launch the Network Settings configuration window as displayed in the below image.

There are numerous settings here including Configure Network, Test Xbox Live Connection, Test PC Connection, and Test Windows Media Center.
For this howto we only need to worry about Configure Network so go ahead and click on that to open the Configure Network configuration window as displayed below.

There are multiple items we will be configuring to make the static IP works properly including IP Address, Subnet Mask, Gateway IP Address, and DNS Server IP Address.

[tab:Step 6]

Xbox 360 IP Settings: With the green bar over top of the current IP address (it may be blank on your 360) click the A button to launch the IP Settings configuration window as displayed below.

Now from the IP Settings configuration window displayed above click on Manual to launch the IP Address configuration window which is where the IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Gateway will be manually configured.

[tab:Step 7]

Xbox 360 Assign IP Address: Click on IP Address to launch the IP Address configuration window as displayed in the below example image.

This is where the IP address you noted in step 1 will be entered so go ahead and enter it and then click the Done button.

[tab:Step 8]

Xbox 360 Assign Subnet Mask: Click on Subnet Mask from the IP Settings Manual configuration window to launch the Subnet Mask configuration window as displayed below. Here you will enter the subnet mask of your local network (LAN) which is more than likely 255.255.255.0.

You can also verify the subnet mask by checking with ipconfig in a Command Prompt window on a computer attached to the same network as the Xbox 360. Click the Done button once the subnet mask has been entered.

[tab:Step 9]

Xbox 360 Assign Gateway: Click on Gateway from the IP Settings main configuration window to launch the Gateway configuration window as displayed in the below image. Enter the Gateway IP address or the IP of your router.

This can also be obtained using ipconfig from a Command Prompt window on a computer attached to the same network as the Xbox 360. Click the Done button in the lower right corner to complete the entry of the Gateway IP address.

[tab:Step 10]

Xbox 360 DNS Main Menu: Once you have entered all three of the above items including IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Gateway click the Done button from the Edit IP Settings configuration window which will take you back to the Configure Network window as displayed below.

Scroll to the DNS Settings as shown in the above image and click that to launch the DNS Settings configuration window as displayed below.

Xbox 360 Add Primary DNS Server: Click Manual as displayed in the image above to launch the DNS settings manual configuration window as displayed below.

Click on the Primary DNS Server to launch the Primary DNS Server manual configuration window as displayed below and enter the DNS server IP address.

Click the Done button once the Primary DNS server has been entered. Your ISP can provide the DNS server IP addresses or you can get them by opening a Command Prompt window from a computer located on the same network as the Xbox 360 and instead of just typing “ipconfig” type “ipconfig /all”.
You will be able to locate the DNS servers underneath the active Network Interface. You can repeat this step for Secondary DNS Server if you have more than one DNS server available.

[tab:Step 11]

Verify Xbox 360 Connection: Now OK out of every window until you are back at the initial Network Settings window where you should run the “Test Xbox Live Connection” to make sure that all of your settings are correct.
If everything is working correctly then you should see a status message similar to the below.

If you are assigning a static IP address because your NAT is displaying as Moderate this is only half of the steps you need to take to resolve that problem. I will be writing the second part in the near future which will explain how to resolve the moderate NAT issue.
For now though your Xbox 360 should be online with a static IP address assigned to it.
