An OSX screenshot setting that many people may want to change is the file format that screenshot saves images in. The default file format for screenshots in OSX is PNG however I personally prefer GIF’s to PNG’s so below is information on how to modify the default PNG file format for screenshots to GIF.
Modify OSX Screenshot File Format From PNG To GIF:
Modifying this setting is easily accomplished via a single command in a terminal window followed by applying the setting. Issue the below command to change the default file format for screenshots in OSX.
defaults write com.apple.screencapture type gif
Now apply the setting by restarting the UI Server using the below command also from a terminal window.
Apply New Screenshot File Format:
killall SystemUIServer
All screenshots taken on your computer running OSX will now be saved as GIF’s instead of PNG’s. You can always change this back to the default of PNG by issuing the above command and by changing “gif” to “png”.
